CANTON, N.Y. - Rensselaer came back from a halftime deficit to gain a nine-point lead and then held off St. Lawrence, 63-59. With the win, the Red Hawks move to 7-11 overall and 5-3 in the Liberty League. St. Lawrence falls to 8-10 overall and 6-2 in the league.
The first half went back and fourth, with five lead changes in the first 20 minutes of play. At the break, The Saints owned a 33-31 lead at the break behind 11 points from senior captain Jimmy White. Freshman Richard Williams had eight rebounds to help keep the ball in the Saints’ possession. For RPI, Tom Schneider had 11 points and five boards. He would finish with
18 points and 10 rebounds.
St. Lawrence held the lead until nine minutes left in the game, when a jumper from Matt Zepernick gave the Red Hawks the lead that they would hold for the remainder of the game. RPI jumped out to a nine-point lead with 2:42 to play, but the Saints fought back to within two but RPI won the free-throw game to win by four.
Zepernick tossed in 12 points, while Joe Johnson finished with nine. White finished with 17 points and seven rebounds for the Saints, who host Vassar on Saturday at 4pm. RPI plays at Clarkson at 4pm on Saturday.
