SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Senior Scott Seney (Silver Spring, MD) got the offense going with the first goal of the game and assisted on Union’s third goal to lead the Dutchmen in a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Rensselaer in front of a sold out Messa Rink.  Union improves to 13-11-5 overall and 6-6-3 in the ECACHL, moving them into sixth place in the league standings.  The Engineers fell to 11-14-3 overall and 5-7-3 in the league.

All five of the tallies came in the second period, beginning with Seney’s fifth of the season at 5:41. The Engineers held a brief lead after scoring two unanswered but the Dutchmen responded with a pair of goals just 15 seconds apart to regain the lead for good.

Following a scoreless first period, where shots were even at eight, Union came out in the second and dealt the first blow on a 5x3 power play at 5:41.  Seney took a pass at the point from Olivier Bouchard (Quebec City, QUE) and shot the puck through traffic to beat Rensselaer goaltender Mathias Lange on his left side.

Rensselaer came back, scoring both its goals on the power play, to take a 2-1 lead at 15:22. Keith MCWilliams scored the first goal at 12:47 to tie the game with his eighth of the season when his shot from the right face-off circle beat Union goaltender Kris Mayotte (Pittsburgh, PA) to the near post.  Oren Eizenman and Kevin Croxton assisted.  Jake Luthi scored the go-ahead tally two minutes and 35 seconds later with a shot to the near post on the opposite side after taking a feed from Chris Hussey.  Freshman Matt Angers-Goulet also had a hand in the play.

Senior Jonathan Poirier (St. Jerome, QUE) tied the game just over a minute after Rensselaer took the lead. Seney passed the puck over to the slot from the left side, where Poirier collected it and flipped it past Lange.

Freshman Chris Potts (Phillipsburg, NJ) followed suit just 15 seconds later when he picked up the puck and skated in on goal to tally the game-winner.

In the third period RPI went on the power play with 1:40 to play and pulled Lange for a six-on-four advantage. Mayotte made two key saves with traffic in front to prevent another comeback.

Mayotte made 22 saves, including 12 on the power play to pick up his 13th win of the season. Lange stopped 19 shots on the other end in the loss.

The “Route 7 Rivarly” moves across town to Troy for the series finale tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. when the Dutchmen will be looking for their second straight series sweep.
