FORT MYERS, Fla. – Freshman Beth Gargon (East Hampton, CT/East Hampton) and senior Amy Huling (Vienna, VA/Holton-Arms School) posted four hits each to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team to a split against Albion and Roger Williams. The Red Hawks, who lost to Albion (5-3) and defeated Roger Williams (12-1), are now 5-1 overall.

Gargon went 4 for 6, including two doubles, three runs scored and three runs batted in, while Huling had four hits, including a double, three runs scored, two RBI and a stolen base in the two games.

Against Albion, Rensselaer was down 3-0 after three innings before scoring three of its own in the top of the fourth to tie the game at 3-3. Albion battled back to score two runs in the bottom of the fourth on its way to the 5-3 victory. Huling started for RPI and went three and two-thirds innings, allowing six hits and one earned run with three strikeouts in the loss. She is now 2-1 on the season.

The Red Hawks improved to 5-1 after scoring eight runs over the first four innings in defeating Roger Williams. Gargon paced Rensselaer, going 3 for 4 with two doubles, two runs and two runs batted in. Huling also had two singles and a double with two runs and two RBI, while classmate Stephanie Vanek (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown) went 2 for 3, including a home run, with three runs and an RBI. Freshman Michelle Street (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) improved to 2-0 in the win, allowing no earned runs and striking out six over six innings pitched.
