LEO, Fla. - Rensselaer scored five runs in the first inning and held an 8-0 lead after three to provide more than enough offense for junior lefthander Luke Calzone (Bethel, CT/Bethel) in the final game of the baseball team's annual trip to Florida. RPI, which defeated Drew 16-4, won four of its last five games and now sits at 4-4 on the young season. Drew falls 3-6.
Calzone improved to 2-0 by allowing just four hits and no earned runs in seven innings of work. Two relievers pitched the final two innings for the Red Hawks.
Offensively for RPI, senior second baseman Rich Mundy (Norwood, NY/Norwood-Norfolk) was 2 for 4, including a double and a home run, with three runs batted in. Also contributing at the plate were senior outfielder Michael Passante (Highland, NY/Highland), who was 2 for 4 with an RBI, and sophomore designated hitter Stevan Slusher (Pedricktown, NJ/Penns Grove), who was 1 for 1 with two runs and three runs knocked in. As a team, the Red Hawks had 14 hits. Drew managed only five.
