TROY, N.Y. – Senior Charles Yarnold (Budd Lake, NJ/Mount Olive) pitched a one-hitter through seven innings as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team salvaged a split against Liberty League rival Clarkson in doubleheader action this afternoon. The Golden Knights (7-6 overall, 2-2 Liberty League) won the first game, 3-2, before dropping the second game, 13-7 to the Red Hawks (6-6, 2-2).

In game one, both teams went scoreless through the first four innings before the Red Hawks picked up two runs in the top of the fifth. Scoring a run in the bottom of the sixth, the Golden Knights rallied for the win as freshman Matt Holiday (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden) delivered the game-winning single in the bottom of the seventh to give Clarkson the 3-2 victory.

Junior Jaime Tunison (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) picked up the victory for the Knights, allowing just one hit in two-thirds of an inning pitched. RPI’s Rich Mundy (Norwood, NY/Norwood-Norfolk) suffered the loss for the Red Hawks, allowing two hits and two runs, both earned, in two-thirds of an inning pitched.

The bats came alive in game two, with RPI jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. The Red Hawks would score six runs through the first five innings before exploding for five in the top of the sixth. Junior Ken Carroll (Shelton, CT/Fairfield Prep.) led the way for Rensselaer going 3 for 5 with two singles, a double and three runs scored.  Sophomore Stevan Slusher (Pedricktown, NJ/Penns Grove) added five RBI in the win on two homeruns.

Clarkson went scoreless through the first eight innings, held in check by the solid pitching of Yarnold, who allowed only one hit, one walk, no runs with 11 strikeouts. Much like in the first game, the Golden Knights capitalized on the RPI bullpen, exploding for seven runs, six of those earned, in the bottom of the ninth. Freshman Matt Giordano (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) went 2 for 3 with a single, double, one run scored and a run batted in. Junior David Potter (Crown Point, NY/Crown Point) went five innings, allowing nine hits, eight runs, all earned, while striking out two in the loss.
