TROY, N.Y. – Pinch hitter Shane Griffin’s (Hudson, NY/Hudson) eighth inning single knocked in two runs to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team a come-from-behind 4-2 victory over Plattsburgh St. in a non-league game at Robison Field. RPI improves to 7-6 with the win while the visiting Cardinals fall to 8-5.
Trailing 2-1, the Red Hawks loaded the bases in the eighth inning, thanks to a Plattsburgh error and a pair of singles. Rensselaer added a third run in the inning for a 4-2 lead and sophomore righthander Tim Klein (Westwood, NJ/St. Joseph Regional) came on to pitch the ninth inning for the save.
Freshman Andy Opperman (Oneida, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) pitched two innings of relief to earn the win for the Red Hawks while Plattsburgh starter Dave Waldron (Saranac, NY/Saranac) suffered the loss. Waldron went 7.1 innings, allowing seven hits and four runs, two earned, with four strikeouts.
