TROY, N.Y. – Despite scoring eight second half goals, including three from sophomore Natalie White (Guilford, CT/Guilford), the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women’s lacrosse team was unable to complete a comeback, falling 17-13 to Liberty League rival Hamilton this afternoon. With the victory, the Continentals improve to 5-2 overall with a 2-0 league mark. The Red Hawks are now 2-5 on the season and 0-3 in the Liberty League.
White put the Red Hawks up 1-0 early in the game, but Hamilton would quickly respond, erupting for six goals over the next three minutes of play to take a 6-1 lead. Junior Suzy Belmont (Scituate, MA/Scituate) led the charge with two of her three first half goals. Despite a two-goal effort mid-way through the period by senior Rebecca Primm (Islip Terrace, NY/East Islip), the Continentals surged ahead on four consecutive goals to take an 11-5 lead into halftime.
Battling rainy and windy conditions, the teams came out firing in the second half. Hamilton posted two quick goals before surrendering three straight to the Red Hawks to make it a 13-8 game. Freshman Allie Shpall (Greenwood Village, CO/Kent Denver School) cushioned the Hamilton lead mid-way through the half, scoring two of the Continentals next four tallies, for a 17-8 lead.
The Red Hawks refused to back down late in the game with five different players registered goals to pull RPI within four (17-13). As the clock wound down Rensselaer was unable to find the back of the net again, securing the Hamilton victory.
Offensively the Continentals were led by junior Inga Stots (Clinton Corners, NY/Millbrook School), who tallied three goals and added two assists. Freshman Kaillie Briscoe (Orangeville, ON/Orangeville) posted three goals and an assist, while Belmont and Shpall also scored three goals. Junior Kalley Greer (Whitby, ON/Anderson) picked up the victory in goal for Hamilton, allowing 11 goals while making five saves.
For Rensselaer, White had a game-high four goals while Primm recorded three goals and an assist. Senior Jen Wahl (Centerreach, NY/Centerreach) added two tallies and sophomore Carly Strife (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) had a goal and two assists. Freshman Gianna Casale (Waterford, NY/Academy of Holy Names) stopped seven shots in the loss for the Red Hawks.
Rensselaer is back in action tomorrow when it hosts #18 Nazareth at Harkness Field (1pm). Hamilton returns to action on Friday, hosting league rival St. Lawrence at 4pm.
