TROY, N.Y. – Senior midfielder Adam LoGiudice (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) scored a team-high four goals, including a beautiful tally late in the fourth quarter to lead Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to a 13-10 win over Clarkson in Liberty League men’s lacrosse action at Harkness Field.
With the victory the Red Hawks improve to 5-6 on the season and remain perfect in league play with a 3-0 mark. The Golden Knights fall to 3-8 overall and 1-2 in league play.
Rensselaer came out firing in the first quarter, tallying three goals in the first four minutes of the contest. Led by two goals from senior Chris Sherman (Newark, DE/St. Marks), RPI took a 5-1 lead heading into the second stanza. Clarkson rallied for two goals to make it a 6-3 game at the 11:06 mark, but the Red Hawks added two goals late in the quarter for an 8-3 lead at halftime.
LoGiudice and Sherman pulled Rensselaer ahead 11-3 early in the third period, but the Golden Knights responded with three goals in the final minute of the quarter, including two from senior captain Bryan Johnson (Northport, NY/Northport).
Clarkson pushed to tie the game in the final stanza, outscoring the Red Hawks 3-1 in the period, but it wasn’t enough as Rensselaer held on for the 13-10 victory.
In addition to LoGiudice, RPI got three goals from Sherman and freshmen Ryan Bigham (Newton, CT/Trinity Pawling) and Josh Secora (Evergreen, CO/Golden) added a goal and an assist each. Four different players tallied single markers and junior Ryan Michels (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) made nine saves to pick up his fifth win of the season.
Johnson tallied a game-high five goals for Clarkson, while classmate Brian Hanlon (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus) added two goals and two assists. Freshman Corey Reinhart (Albany, NY/Colonie) chipped in two goals and an assist and junior goaltender Brian McClure (Painted Post, NY/Corning West) stopped three shots in the loss for the Golden Knights.
RPI returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Middlebury in a non-conference game at 5pm. Clarkson plays at area-rival St. Lawrence on Wednesday (4pm).
