Red Hawks improve to 23-3 with 5-0 & 10-0 shutouts of St. Lawrence

TROY, N.Y. - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) pitchers allowed just four hits and no runs in two games as the Red Hawks swept a Liberty League doubleheader from St. Lawrence University, 5-0 and 10-0, at Doris Robison Field. Rensselaer, which had 21 hits on the afternoon, improves to 23-3 overall and 2-0 in the league. The Saints are now 5-16 and 0-2.

In the first game, freshman righthander Michelle Street (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) struck out 16 and the Red Hawks hit three home runs, including two by senior Amy Huling (Vienna, VA/Holton-Arms), on their way to the shutout. Street allowed just two hits and one walk to improve to 9-1 and Huling hit a pair of two-run home runs to leftfield. She finished with two runs and four RBI in two at bats. Freshman Julianne Bass (Costa Mesa, CA/Newport Harbor) accounted for RPI’s other run with a solo home run to centerfield immediately following Huling’s second homer of the game.

Junior Ava Pickering (Arlington, VT/Arlington) suffered the loss for the Saints, who got singles from two different players.

In the nightcap, which lasted only five innings, Huling allowed just two singles and one walk with six strikeouts to improve to 10-2. Offensively, she had two hits, two runs and an RBI. Bass was 3 for 3, including a pair of doubles, with three runs and a run batted in. Three others had two hits apiece, including senior catcher Katherine Valenta (LaGrange, IL/Lyons Township), who scored a run and knocked in two others.

Pickering also took the loss in the second game to fall to 3-8.

Rensselaer, which has outscored its opponents by 174 runs (216-42), returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts a doubleheader against Manhattanville beginning at 3:30pm. St. Lawrence is back on the field on Wednesday against Hamilton in a Liberty League doubleheader at 4pm in Canton.
