TROY, N.Y. – Sophomore attack Jim Cabrera (Old Greenwich, CT/Taft), the Panthers leading scorer, tallied five goals, including two in the first half, to lead 11th-ranked Middlebury past Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in a non-conference men’s lacrosse action at Harkness Field.  The visiting Panthers improve to 7-3 while the Red Hawks fall to 5-7.

Middlebury got goals from four different players to build a 4-0 lead through the first period and the Panthers added a fifth early in the second before RPI scored.  Senior midfielder Adam LoGiudice (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) broke through the Panthers defense at 11:05 of the second period to pull the Red Hawks within 5-1.  Middlebury added another tally with less than a minute remaining in the half to take a 6-1 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, the Panthers came out firing, scoring six consecutive goals, including three from Cabrera, to make it 12-1 with just over five minutes to play in the frame.  Rensselaer freshman Josh Secora (Evergreen, CO/Golden) and LoGiudice added one goal each to make it a 12-3 deficit for the Red Hawks heading into the final period.

The teams traded goals in the fourth quarter on markers from Panthers freshman Tom Petty (Newburyport, MA/Phillips Exeter) and LoGiudice.

In addition to Cabrera, the Panthers got three goals and three assists from senior Henry Sheehan (Newport, RI/St. George’s). Classmate J.P. Coviello (Summit, NJ/Summit) added two goals while Aaron Herter (Carlisle, MA/Middlesex) had a goal and an assist. Junior goaltender Alex Palmisano (Southport, CT/Holderness) earned the victory, making six saves in 39:41 minutes.  Classmate Pete Britt (Summit, NJ/Summit) posted five saves in 20:19.

For Rensselaer, LoGiudice had three goals and Secora added one. Senior Chris Sherman (Newark, DE/St. Marks) had an assist and junior Ryan Michels (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) finished with 13 saves in the loss.
