NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - Senior Joe Ihnatolya (Clifton Park, NY/Shenedehowa) tied a school single game record with five hits, including a double and a home run, with three runs and four runs batted in to lead the Rensselaer baseball team to an 18-5 win over Mass. College of Liberal Arts. RPI, which had 17 hits as a team, improves to 19-8.
The visiting Red Hawks jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning and an 11-0 edge after the third before MCLA got on the board with four runs in its half of the third inning. Rensselaer outscored the Mountaineers 7-1 the rest of the way for the final margin.
In addition to Ihnatolya, four other players had multiple hits, including senior Rich Mundy (Norwood, NY/Norwood-Norfolk), who was 2 for 3 with two doubles, three runs and three RBI. Junior Adam Lasek (Waterford, NY/Waterford) had three hits and two runs scored for the Red Hawks, who got solid pitching from four different hurlers. Freshman starter Andrew Opperman (Oneida, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) earned the win.
