TROY, N.Y. – Led by three goals apiece from junior Tia Morgia (Watertown, NY/Watertown) and senior Amy O’Donnell (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem), 18th-ranked Nazareth defeated the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women’s lacrosse team, 11-2, in non-conference action at Harkness Field. With the victory, the Golden Flyers improve to 5-0 overall while the Red Hawks fall to 2-6 on the season.

Morgia and O’Donnell both tallied twice to put Nazareth ahead 6-0 through the first 30 minutes of play.

In the second half, five different players notched a goal to give the Golden Flyers an 11-0 lead with 16:27 remaining in the contest.  Rensselaer broke through offensively at the 5:58 mark when freshman Carly Mahony (Topsfield, MA/Masconomet Regional) converted a Michelle Michelenko’s (Dewitt, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) pass for a goal. Mahony added another tally with 4:02 left in the game.

In addition to Morgia and O’Donnell, Nazareth got a goal and two assists from senior Melissa Passno (Penn Yann, NY/Penn Yann Academy) and four other players tallied one goal apiece.  Junior goalie Heather Chaapel (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) made four saves to pick up the win in goal.

Freshman goalie Gianna Casale (Waterford, NY/Academy of Holy Names) stopped ten shots in the loss for Rensselaer.

The Red Hawks return to action on Thursday when they host Hartwick in a non-conference match-up at Harkness Field (5:30pm). Nazareth is back in action on Friday at Empire 8-rival Ithaca (4pm).
