TROY, N.Y. – Junior midfielder Matt Ward (Concord, MA/Concord-Carlisle) tallied a game-high three goals and added two assists to lead Skidmore past Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Liberty League men’s lacrosse action at Harkness Field. With the victory, the Thoroughbreds improve to 6-6 overall and 2-3 in the league. The Red Hawks fall to 5-9 overall, with a 3-2 Liberty League mark.
Ward put Skidmore on the board with two first quarter goals and added a third at 9:01 of the second stanza for a 3-0 ThoroughbredS lead. Down 4-0, with just under two minutes to play in the half, RPI freshman midfielder Josh Secora (Evergreen, CO/Golden) pulled the Red Hawks to within 4-1 with his 14th goal of the season.
The Thoroughbreds scored a pair of third quarter goals to make it 6-1 with just over five minutes to play in the frame. The Red Hawks cut the deficit to four when Secora tallied at the 3:47 mark, but Skidmore prevailed in the final period, netting three goals, including two from senior Tom Spinella (New Hartford, NY/Loomis Chaffee) for the final margin.
Sophomore John Kotsinonos (Princeton Jct., NJ/The Peddie School) had two goals and two assists and freshman Nick Coppola (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) added a goal and an assist for the Thoroughbreds. Junior attack Micah Hawes-Sivitz (Conway, MA/Northfield Mr. Hermon) also had a goal and senior James de Gorter (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) made six saves in the cage.
In addition to Secora, sophomore midfielder Alex MacDiarmid (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) chipped in an assist and sophomore John Thibdeau (Altamont, NY/Bethlehem) picked up the loss for the Red Hawks, stopping 11 shots.
Rensselaer hosts area and league-rival Union at Harkness Field on Saturday (12pm) in the regular season finale for both teams. Skidmore also returns to action Saturday when it travels to Clarkson (2pm).
