Baseball Scores 35 Runs in Doubleheader

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Rensselaer baseball team completed the season sweep of Skidmore College with a pair of victories, 12-1 and a 23-3, at Castle Diamond.  With the wins, RPI is now 27-8 overall - including 22 wins in its last 24 games - and 16-4 in the Liberty League.  The Red Hawks currently sit in first place in the league standings.  The Thoroughbreds drop to 14-19 and 5-13.

In the first game, RPI senior pitcher Charles Yarnold (Badd Lake, NJ/Mount Olive) improved to 6-1 with a complete game win.  He scattered six hits with six strikeouts and no walks.  Senior first baseman Joe Ihnatoyla (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) had a bases-loaded triple in a five-run Red Hawks second inning to pace the offense.  He also had a sacrifice fly in the first inning to give him four RBI for the game.  Also for RPI, Jim Devine (Castleton, NY/Columbia) was 3-4 with a pair of runs, Sean Wilkes (Troy, NY/Catholic Central) was 2-5 with three runs and two RBI and Matt Muscatiello (Kinderhook, NY/Ichabod Crane) was 2-4 with two runs and an RBI double.

For the Thoroughbreds, Martin Levinson (San Francisco, CA) was 2-3 with a run and Mike Salamone (Albany, NY, Newton South-MA) was 1-3 with an RBI single.

In game two, RPI picked up where they left off, scoring 23 runs on 23 hits.  Junior lefthander Luke Colzone (Bethel, CT/Bethel) improved to 8-0, allowing two runs and three hits, while striking out four.  Ihnatoyla continued swinging a hot bat, going 2-5, including a grand slam in the sixth inning.  He finished with six RBI and three runs.  Junior Jason Pollard (Hudson, NY/Hudson) went 3-6 with three RBI, while Devine was 3-5 with a home run and three RBIs.

For Skidmore, Evan McNamara (Milton, MA/Milton Academy) and Tim Ryan (Barrington, RI/Barrington) were 1-4.  Ed Reilly (Tenafly, NJ/Tenafly) was 1-3 with a run.

Rensselaer returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Hartwick in a non-league game at 4:30pm at Robison Field.
