TROY, N.Y. – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute used solid pitching to sweep a softball doubleheader from Skidmore College and set the school record for wins in a season. RPI, the 21st-ranked team in the nation, won 8-0 and 14-1 to improve to 31-3 overall, breaking the previous win mark of 29, which was set in 1998 (29-9). The Red Hawks are now 6-0 in the Liberty League while Skidmore falls to 11-25 overall and 0-6 in the league.
Freshman Michelle Street (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) allowed just two hits with 11 strikeouts in 5.0 innings and Rensselaer’s offense scored eight runs on ten hits to down Skidmore, 8-0, in a five-inning affair. Street struck out each of the first seven batters she faced and nine of the first ten to improve to 14-1.
Offensively for the Red Hawks, freshman catcher Julianne Bass (Costa Mesa, CA/Newport Harbor) was 3 for 3 with three runs and an RBI, junior third baseman Katherine Valenta (LaGrange, IL/Lyons Township) was 2 for 3 with a run and three RBI and sophomore Logan Russell (Cranbury, NJ/Princeton) was 2 for 3 with a pair of runs batted in.
For Skidmore, sophomore third baseman Sasha Diamond-Lenow (Wayland, MA/Wayland) had a double while classmate Sarah Stehouwer (Woodstock, VT/Woodstock Union) suffered the loss from the circle. She allowed ten hits and eight earned runs with two strikeouts in 4.0 innings.
In the nightcap, Rensselaer took advantage of nine walks in the first inning to score ten runs and the Red Hawks went on to win 14-1 in five innings.
Senior Stephanie Vanek (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown) struck out seven to improve to 5-0 in the circle for RPI. Offensively, she was 2 for 2 with two runs and two runs batted in. Senior Amy Huling (Vienna, VA/Holton-Arms) added a double, a run scored and three RBI.
Sophomore starter Jamie Bergen (Wells, VT/Granville) suffered the loss for the Thoroughbreds. She chipped in with a double from the plate.
Rensselaer is back in action on Monday afternoon with a doubleheader at Mass. College of Liberal Arts (3pm). Skidmore returns to the field on Thursday for a Liberty League doubleheader against Union (3pm).
