TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women’s lacrosse team rallied for eight second-half goals but was unable to overcome its deficit, falling 17-13 to Hartwick in a non-conference match-up. With the victory, the visiting Hawks improve to 6-2. The Red Hawks are now 2-7.
Freshman Kerri Clark (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) and sophomore Morgan Wahl (Lexington, MA/Lexington) put Rensselaer ahead 2-0 early in the game on a pair of free position goals, but Hartwick quickly responded with Jenec Schilling (Vineyard Haven, MA/Martha’s Vineyard Regional) pulling the Hawks within a goal (2-1). Rensselaer tallied two more goals mid-way through the period before Hartwick scored the next five goals. Freshman Sara Thomas (Latham, NY/Shaker) and sophomore Kelsey Campbell (Camillus, NY/West Genesee) scored two goals apiece to give Hartwick a 7-5 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Hartwick posted four consecutive goals to build an 11-5 lead at the 23:44 mark. The Red Hawks pulled to within 11-9 on four straight goals, including two from sophomore Natalie White (Guilford, CT/Guilford). Campbell cushioned the Hartwick lead mid-way through the half, scoring three of the Hawks next six tallies for a 17-9 lead.
RPI rallied late in the game, scoring four straight goals, including two from senior co-captain Kate Phillips (Wilton, NY/Saratoga Springs) to pull within four (17-13).
Offensively, Hartwick was led by Campbell, who tallied five goals. Thomas posted four goals and an assist, while sophomore Jamie Boulton (Camillus, NY/West Genesse) added four goals. Schilling chipped in two goals and two other players tallied for Hartwick. Senior Amanda Gerich (Johnson City, NY/Maine-Endwell) picked up the victory in goal, making eight saves to improve to 6-2 overall.
For Rensselaer, White, Phillips and Clark all tallied three goals apiece. Wahl, sophomore Carly Strife (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs), junior Michelle Michalenko (Dewitt, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) and freshman Carly Mahony (Topsfield, MA/Masconomet Regional) all scored a goal each. Freshman Gianna Casale (Waterford, NY/Academy of Holy Names) stopped four shots in the loss and is now 2-7.
Rensselaer is back in action on Sunday when it hosts Liberty League rival Vassar at Harkness Field (12pm). Hartwick returns to action on Saturday at St. John Fisher (4pm).
