TROY, N.Y. – Freshman midfielder Jesse Stevenson (Marshfield, MA/Marshfield) scored three goals, including a back-handed marker in the second quarter, to lead Connecticut College to a 9-6 victory over the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men’s lacrosse team in non-league action at Harkness Field. The visiting Camels improve to 3-5 while the Red Hawks fall to 4-6.
With Conn. up 1-0 mid-way through the opening quarter, RPI sophomore Alex MacDiarmid (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) scored to even the game at 1-1. Connecticut College broke open the lead at the end of the period and into the second stanza with four consecutive goals for a 5-1 at the 9:34 mark. The Red Hawks fought back on a goal by senior Chris Sherman (Newark, DE/St. Marks) to narrow their deficit to 5-2 at halftime.
In the third quarter, senior Adam LoGiudice (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) tallied two of his three goals to pull the Red Hawks within two (6-4) at the 5:23 mark. The Camels responded, adding a pair of goals for an 8-4 lead in the fourth. Sherman and LoGiudice cut the deficit to three goals in the final minutes, but the Camels hung on.
In addition to Stevenson, Conn. College got two goals from senior Brendan Rampi (North Easton, MA/Thayer Academy) and a goal and three assists from classmate Brad Luckhardt (Danville, CA/Needham). Sophomore Matt Flanagan (Somerset, NJ/Immaculata) chipped in a goal and two assists while fellow sophomore Randall Morrison (Erdenheim, PA/Germantown Academy) made eight saves in goal.
For Rensselaer, LoGiudice had three goals while Sherman finished with two. MacDiarmid added a goal and junior Ryan Michels (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) finished with 13 saves in the cage.
