CANTON, NY - Rensselaer senior righthander Charlie Yarnold threw a complete game two-hit shutout, striking out ten in a 4-0 win as the Red Hawks swept St. Lawrence University in a Liberty League doubleheader at Tom Fay Field.
Junior lefty Luke Calzone won his fifth of the season without a loss in the first game, a 2-1 win for RPI. The Red Hawks took three of four from the Saints in the Saturday-Sunday Liberty League series and improved to 14-7 overall and 5-3 in the Liberty League. SLU is now 10-10 and 6-6.
Yarnold no-hit the Saints into the fifth inning before Ryan Kimber hit a soft liner over short for SLU’s first hit of the game. Matt Carrigg dumped a blooper into right field for the other hit in the Saints seventh.
RPI grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Mike Passante doubled in a run and scored on a single by Stevan Slusher. The Red Hawks made it 3-0 off Saints starter Troy Lassial in the fifth when Adam Lasek reached on an error and pinch runner Matt Muscatiello scored on Dan Valentine’s single. Valentine scored an insurance run on a dropped ball in short left field in the bottom of the eighth.
Yarnold did not walk a batter and six of his strikeouts came on called third strikes as he improved to 2-1 on the season.
Calzone and Saints junior Mike Gipson locked up in a good pitching duel in the first game of the Sunday twinbill. Gipson scattered six hits and struck out four while Calzone allowed four hits and struck out seven with each pitcher giving up just one earned run.
RPI broke on top with an unearned run in the bottom of the first when Passante reached on a two-out error, stole second and scored on Rich Mundy’s single to center.
The Saints tied it in the top of the fourth on a homer to left by senior designated hitter Joe Regonlinski, but RPI scored the game winner in the bottom of the same inning.
Joe Ihantolya singled through the hole at short and beat the throw to second on a fielder’s choice on Jim Devine’s sacrifice bunt. Both runners moved up on a foul pop which was caught by Saints catcher Joel Kolcan in a tumbling play by the Saint dugout and Ihnatolya scored on a ground out to give the Red Hawks their 2-1 lead.
