Red Hawks earn first Liberty League victory of the season

TROY, N.Y. – Led by a game-high six goals from senior Kate Phillips (Wilton, NY/Saratoga Springs), the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women’s lacrosse team snapped a six-game losing streak with a 19-11 victory over Vassar in Liberty League action at Harkness Field. The Red Hawks improve to 3-7 overall and are now 1-3 in the league. The Brewers fall to 6-5 with an 0-4 Liberty League mark.

Senior Rebecca Primm (Islip Terrace, NY/East Islip) put the Red Hawks up 1-0 early in the game and Rensselaer went on to score four more through the first 16 minutes of the contest. Phillips began a scoring stretch at the 10:44 mark, tallying the second of her three first half goals.

Sophomore Natalie White (Guilford, CT/Guilford) and junior Sabrina Alimi (Dewitt, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) also tallied to give RPI an 8-3 lead with just under eight minutes left in the half. Despite a three-goal effort by Vassar junior Ali Fantl (W. Hartford, CT/William Hall), the Red Hawks held a 10-8 lead at halftime.

The Red Hawks scored five consecutive goals to open the second half, including three from Phillips. After surrendering a goal by sophomore Christine Castellan (Media, PA/Penncrest), Rensselaer cushioned it's lead, adding four more goals to take a 19-9 lead with seven minutes remaining. The Brewers fought back late in the game, with Fantl recording a goal and an assist, but RPI held on for the 19-11 win.

In addition to Phillips, the Red Hawks got four goals from White while freshman Kerri Clark (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) had two goals and five assists. Primm finished with two goals and two assists and sophomore Carly Strife (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) added two goals and an assist. Senior Jen Wahl (Centerreach, NY/Centerreach) chipped in two unassisted markers and freshman Gianna Casale (Waterford, NY/Academy of Holy Names) had seven saves in the cage.

For Vassar, Fantl finished with four goals and two assists, while senior Jessica Johnson (Denver, CO/Colorado Academy) had two goals. Castellan had a goal and two assists and senior Kristin Hogan (Baltimore, MD/The Park School) scored two goals. Freshman Taylor Herman (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) stopped 11 of 30 shots on net.

Rensselaer returns to action next weekend with a trip to the North Country. RPI faces St. Lawrence and Clarkson on Friday (4pm) and Saturday (2pm), respectively. Vassar is also in action next weekend at Clarkson and St. Lawrence.
