TROY, N.Y. – Clarkson University scored four runs in the eighth inning and junior righthander Darrell Carey (Bohemia, NY/St. John the Baptist) allowed just nine hits as the fourth-seeded Golden Knights defeated top-seeded Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 5-4, in the second game of the four-team, double elimination Liberty League Tournament at Robison Field at Rensselaer.
Clarkson improves to 20-18 and advances to play St. Lawrence in a winners bracket game this afternoon at 5pm. The Red Hawks, who saw their school record winning streak snapped at 17 games, fall to 32-9. They are right back on the field to face Rochester in an elimination game.
Carey, an All-Liberty League First Team selection, improved to 10-1 with the complete game, including working his way out of a bases loaded, no outs jam in the ninth inning. He finished with ten strikeouts, including two in the ninth, while allowing just four walks.
The Golden Knights jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI double to right field by senior Stefan Casey (Waterbury, VT/Harwood) that scored Rob Cowin (Albany, NY/CBA).
RPI tied the score in the bottom of the second inning when sophomore shortstop Matt Muscatiello (Kinderhook, NY/Ichabod Crane) doubled to left field with two outs and scored on a single by freshman Jim Devine (Castleton, NY/Columbia).
Senior second baseman Rich Mundy (Norwood, NY/Norwood-Norfolk) put the home team on top, 2-1, with a solo home run over the leftfield wall to leadoff the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Golden Knights regained the lead with their big eighth inning. Cowin opened the frame with a single and was sacrificed to second base. After a Casey single and a TJ Brinkman (Troy, NY/Troy) walk loaded the bases, junior Brian Theilemann (Troy, NY/Troy) singled up the middle to score two runs and give Clarkson a 3-2 lead. Matt Holiday (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden) followed with a run-scoring single before Mickey Booth (Middleton, NY/Minisink) had a run scoring fielders’ choice.
Senior starter Charles Yarnold (Budd Lake, NJ/Mount Olive), also an All-Liberty League First Team choice, went 7.1 innings, allowed three runs on eight hits. He struck out five in falling to 7-2 on the season.
