Box Score

TROY, N.Y. – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) scored once in the first half and twice in the second on its way to a 3-0 win over Colby-Sawyer in the second game of the Third Annual Red Hawk Classic hosted by Rensselaer at Harkness Field. The match was the first of the season for both teams.

RPI and Colby-Sawyer both had decent opportunities in the first half but neither team cashed in until late in the first half. RPI freshman Jabel Prom (Sandy Spring, MD/Sherwood) gave the home team a 1-0 lead at the 37:39 mark when he outran a defender for a loose ball and slid the ball under Colby-Sawyer goalie Bill Closs’s (Merrimack, NH/Merrimack) left side.

Junior Gary Stroka (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) put the Red Hawks ahead by a pair after intercepting the ball and scoring past Closs on a turn-around shot at 54:09 of the second half.

Freshman Travis Connell (Leavenworth, KS/Leavenworth) set up RPI’s third goal when his hard cross was headed into the back of the net by senior Dave Roberge (Hampton Falls, NH/Winnacunnet). That goal came at the 63:28 mark.

Junior John Thibdeau (Altamont, NY/Bethlehem) earned the shutout for the Red Hawks, stopping the one shot he faced. Closs finished with 10 saves for Colby-Sawyer, including several from close range.

Rensselaer returns to action on Saturday at 7:30pm against Old Westbury while the Chargers face Union at 5pm. The Dutchmen defeated Old Westbury, 4-0, in the first game of the classic.
