SCHENECTADY, NY – Rensselaer freshman Jabel Prom (Sandy Spring, MD/Sherwood) scored the eventual game-winner just 27 minutes into the game to lead the Red Hawks to a 2-0 win over Potsdam at the Union Classic Sunday afternoon. RPI improves to 3-2 on the season while the Bears are now 2-2-1 overall.
Prom, who cut directly to the front of the net, received a cross from the left courtesy of sophomore Mike Henzel (Niwot, CO/Niwot) and sent the ball in from point-blank range.
Rensselaer added an insurance goal in the 80th minute when Brandon LeFevre (Ravena, NY/Albany Academy) carried a pass from Luke Burton (Remsen, NY/Remsen) up the right side of the field and fired the ball past the left side of Potsdam goaltender Tyler Lattimore (Gansevoort, NY/South High).
Lattimore made 10 saves in the loss for Potsdam, while Rensselaer goaltender John Thibdeau (Altamont, NY/ Bethlehem) stopped three shots for the shutout victory.
Rensselaer held an 18-5 shot advantage and a 7-4 favor in corner kicks in the game.
Potsdam is back in action on Friday, Sept. 16 when the Bears travel to Buffalo State for a 4 p.m. SUNYAC game. Rensselaer hosts Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16.
