TROY, N.Y. – Led by a goal and an assist each from freshmen Lincoln Field (Warren, NH/Hopkinton) and Jabel Prom (Sandy Spring, MD/Sherwood), the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men’s soccer team defeated Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, 5-0, in non-conference action at Harkness Field. With the victory, the Red Hawks improve to 4-2 on the season, while the Trailblazers drop to 3-3.
Rensselaer, which held a 12-3 shots on goal advantage in the match, scored three first half goals in a six minute span. Field started the flurry working around an MCLA defender before lobbing the ball up over the head of the goalie into the net at the 18:37 mark. Sophomore Tim Wisner (Middleburgh, NY/Middleburgh) put the Red Hawks ahead by two at 23:19, chipping in a hard cross from junior Aaron Gundle (Portland, OR/Lincoln) for the goal.
Less than a minute later, junior Gary Sroka (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) connected on a header by Field. Gundle got the play started, dribbling the ball past two MCLA players and sending the ball up to Field, who headed the ball to Sroka for the tally at 24:15.
In the second half, Prom scored an unassisted goal at the 56:27 mark and later assisted on Rensselaer’s fifth goal by sophomore Brandon LeFevre (Ravena, NY/Albany Academy) at 71:24.
The Red Hawks controlled the ball almost the entire game with a total of 21 shots compared to Mass College’s five shots. Mass. College of Liberal Arts senior goalie Zach Natale (Florance, MA/Holyoke Catholic) had a total of seven saves in the 90 minutes of game time.
RPI saw three goaltenders split time in the net this afternoon. Junior John Thibdeau (Altamont, NY/Bethlehem) who started the game made no saves before giving way to classmate Jeffrey Krywanczyk (Chazy, NY/Chazy Central Rural) who posted three saves for the win. Junior Mike Prince (Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore) came in for Krywanczyk in the final eight minutes with no saves.
Rensselaer returns to action next Friday and Saturday when it opens the home portion of its Liberty League schedule against Hamilton (3pm) and Hobart (1pm), respectively. MCLA is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Springfield College (4pm).
