TROY, N.Y. – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) tallied two goals in both halves to defeat Old Westbury, 4-0, in the final game of the Third Annual Red Hawk Classic hosted by Rensselaer at Harkness Field. With the victory, the Red Hawks improve to 2-0-0, while Old Westbury falls to 0-2-0.

Rensselaer got on the board early in the first half, after a goal by senior Dave Roberge (Hampton Falls, NH/Winnacunnet). Corralling a loose ball, Roberge lobbed a shot into the lower corner of the net past the diving Panthers goalie for the 1-0 lead at the 5:18 mark. Freshman Jabel Prom (Sandy Spring, MD/Sherwood) doubled the Rensselaer score at 25:48 off a Panthers deflection into the top left corner of the net.

Junior John Thibdeau (Altamont, NY/Bethlehem), made an amazing stop late in the half to preserve RPI’s 2-0 lead heading into halftime.

In the second half, the Red Hawks jumped out to a three goal lead on a tally by freshman Lincoln Field (Warren, NH/Hopkinton). Positioned outside the box, Field turned and fired a pass from classmate Sean Fleury (Princeton, MA/Wachusett Regional) into the back of the net at the 54:45 mark.

Sophomore Mike Henzel (Niwot, CO/Niwot) scored RPI’s fourth goal late in the game, tallying off his own rebound into the Old Westbury goal with three minutes remaining.

Thibdeau made five saves to earn the win for Rensselaer while his counterpart Brian Hicks (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream South) stopped 11 in the loss for the Panthers.
