TROY, N.Y. – Sophomore Kerri Clark (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga) tallied the game-winning goal with less than two minutes remaining in the second half to give the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team a 1-0, victory over 14th-ranked Skidmore College in Liberty League action. The Red Hawks are now 4-4 and improve to 2-0 in Liberty League play, while the Thoroughbreds fall to 5-2 and are 2-1 in the league.
“It was a great victory,” said RPI head coach Bridget LaNoir. “We came into the year with a tough schedule and we prepared ourselves for always playing a big game. That’s what we’ve worked toward. It’s nice to pick up the victory and a great way to cap off a solid weekend of league play.”
Solid defense dominated the first half, which saw neither team get on the scoreboard. Rensselaer senior goaltender Liz Szewczak (Enfield, CT/Enrico Fermi) made four saves in the half, with a game total of eight.
“Liz (Szewczak) was our anchor back there, she was great,” said LaNoir.
Clark sealed the Rensselaer victory when she tallied with 1:30 remaining in the game for her third goal of the weekend. Freshman Shaina Feldman (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville Area) earned the assist on the goal after finding the ball in a crowd and passing it to Clark, who shot it by the left side of Skidmore goaltender Meredith Peeke (Exeter, NH/Phillips Exeter Academy), who finished with one save in the match.
Rensselaer returns to action on Wednesday at league-rival Vassar (4pm). Skidmore is also in action on Wednesday for a game at Oneonta St. (6pm).
