POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – In a game that featured just a handful of scoring opportunities, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) made the most of its chances. The Red Hawks scored the game's only goal on their first shot and defeated host Vassar, 1-0, in Liberty League field hockey action.

With the victory RPI (5-4, 3-0) remains atop the league standings with its third consecutive win. Vassar (4-6 overall, 0-3 Liberty League) lost its third straight league game by 1-0 margins. The Brewers are idle until October 6 when they host Rochester. RPI next plays a non-league game at Drew on September 30 (1pm).

RPI scored the game's only goal in transition with just under seven minutes to play in the first half. After stopping offensive pressure from Vassar, the Red Hawks moved up field led by the play of junior forward Michelle Clemente (Renssalaer, NY/Columbia), who fed streaking sophomore forward Kristiina Baker (Boston, MA/Nashoba Regional).  Baker scored on a breakaway against Vassar sophomore goalie Taylor Herman (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central).

RPI had three shots against the Vassar tandem of Herman and junior Ellie Pomerantz (Hartsdale, NY/The Hackey School), who made two second half saves in replacement of Herman.

RPI senior goalie Liz Szewczak (Enfield, CT/Enrico Fermi) kept the Vassar offense at bay with six saves.  Szewczak has not allowed a goal in her last 215 minutes of action.

Vassar held an 11-5 advantage on penalty corners, but the RPI defense held its ground.
