MADISON, N.J. – Sophomore Lisa Pak (Methuen, MA/Methuen) tallied the game-winning goal in the second overtime to lead Rensselaer to a 3-2 victory over Drew University this afternoon. The Red Hawks improve to 6-4 on the season with their fourth consecutive victory. The Rangers fall to 2-5 overall.
Pak scored the game-winner at the 79:29 mark of the second overtime from twelve yards out from center.
Rensselaer opened the scoring in the first half, when junior Michelle Clemente (Rensselaer, NY/Columbia) tallied off a pass from sophomore Sara Stylinski (Southington, CT/Southington). Stylinski sent a Michelle Roy (Rensselaer, NY/Columbia) corner shot to Clemente, who put it past Rangers goalie Stef Rutkowski (Wilmington, DE/Tower Hill) for the goal.
Freshman Molly Johnston (Ivoryton, CT/Valley Regional) made it a 2-0 Red Hawks lead with less than a minute remaining in the half off a pass from classmate Margaret Chowaniec (Burlington, CT/Lewis Mills).
Drew battled back in the second half, tying the match at 2-2. Junior Ryan Hoover (Dallas, PA/Lake-Lehman HS) started the comeback when she tipped in a shot by classmate Whitney Kerns (Doylestown, PA/Germantown Academy) at the 44:30 mark. Kerns would earn her second assist of the day less than ten minutes later on a goal by freshman Nicole DiBattista (Newton, NJ/Kittatinny Regional).
Senior Jen O’Neil (Derry, NH/Pinkerton Academy) made six saves in the win for RPI, which played its third overtime game of the season. Rutkowski posted 11 saves in the loss for Drew.
Rensselaer, which is 3-0 in Liberty League action, plays again on Friday and Saturday against league-foes William Smith (3pm) and Rochester (1pm), respectively. Drew returns to action on Thursday at CW Post.
