TROY, N.Y. – Freshman Mario Valery-Trabucco (Montreal, PQ/Northwood Prep) had two goals and an assist and junior Justin Mrazek (Regina, SK/Estevan Bruins) stopped all 24 shots he faced to lead Union College to a 5-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in a Division I non-league men’s hockey team game at the Houston Field House.
Union struck first when sophomore forward T.J. Fox (Oswego, NY/Chicago Steel) tallied from the bottom of the right faceoff circle just after the Dutchmen killed off a power play. Fox started the play by chipping the puck off the boards in the defensive zone to Torren Delforte (Shortsville, NY/Boston Jr. Bruins), who carried the puck up the ice near the side boards. Delforte centered a pass to Fox, who scored his ninth goal of the season at 10:15 of the first period.
The Dutchmen doubled their lead when Delforte wristed a shot off a rebound under the cross bar at 5:40 of the second period. Freshmen Mike Wakita (Kitimat, B.C./Powell River Kings), who took the initial shot received the assist for the goal.
The Dutchmen made it 3-0 on a four-on-three power-play goal at 13:33 of the second. Freshman Mike Schreiber (Sherwood Park, AB/Ft McMurray Oil Barons) took a rocket of a shot that caromed off the post and then off of Engineer goaltender Mathias Lange’s (Klagenfurt, Austria/New York Apple Core) back and into the net.
The third period saw two Valery-Trabucco power-play goals to make the final score 5-0. Trabucco’s first of the period came when he jammed a rebound home off of a Fox shot. Andrew Estey (Fredericton, NB/Alberni Bulldogs) received the other assist. The second goal came with 1:43 remaining as he took a nice pass from Michael Beynon (Nepean, ON/Nepean Raiders) from across the goal mouth and tapped the puck home.
Mrazek made 24 saves for Union while Lange made 20 in the loss. Union was successful on three power-play attempts of nine total, while the Engineers did not connect on ten attempts.
The two teams meet again on Saturday evening at Messa Rink in Schenectady at 7:00pm.
