TROY, N.Y. – Junior Brooke Thompson (Rochester, NY/Rochester Edge) scored two goals, including a short-handed marker to open the game and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women’s ice hockey team hung on to defeat Quinnipiac University, 3-1, in ECACHL action this afternoon. RPI, which defeated #10 Princeton on Saturday, earned its second league sweep of the season to improve to 10-12-1 overall and 6-5-1 in the ECACHL. The Bobcats fall to 7-17-0 with a 4-12-0 league mark.
Rensselaer jumped out to a two-goal lead on a pair of goals from Thompson. A left winger, Thompson tallied unassisted at the 6:03 mark after breaking through the Bobcats’ defense for a clear shot at goalie Laura Brennan (White Bear Lake, MN/Minnesota St.). The goal was her first short-handed effort on the season.
Sophomore Jamie-Lynn Stewart (Cambridge, ON/Cambridge Jr. Fury) earned an assist on Thompson’s second goal when she fought for the puck in the neutral zone, sliding it up through the Quinnipiac defense into the offensive zone. Much like her earlier goal, Thompson fought past several Bobcats players, lifting a shot past Brennan for the 2-0 advantage.
The Engineers kept the pressure up in the second stanza, securing a 3-0 lead at 8:16. Tallying her team-leading 10th goal of the year, senior captain Sarah Daniel (Calgary, AB/Bowness Bruins) converted a Stewart shot off the post over the reach of Brennan.
Quinnipiac, which outshot Rensselaer, 20-14, through the final two periods, got on the scoreboard later in the frame on Hayley McMeekin’s (Unionville, ON/Toronto Aeros) eighth goal of the season. Freshman Breana Burton (Surrey, BC/Pacific Steelers) started the play, skating through the left circle and passing the puck up into traffic in front. Sophomore Nicolette Leone (Trenton, NJ/Telus Lightning) attempted a shot, but the puck rebounded out to McMeekin, who put it in on the right side at 15:51.
Sophomore Ashley Mayr (Burnaby, BC/BC Breakers) improved to 9-10-1 with 26 saves in the win for the Engineers, who were 0-6 with the man-advantage. Brennan posted 25 saves in the loss for the Bobcats, whose only goal came on the power play. Quinnipiac finished 1-7 with the man-advantage.
Rensselaer returns to the ice on Friday and Saturday traveling to St. Lawrence (7pm) and Clarkson (4pm). Quinnipiac is back in action next weekend hosting a pair of non-league games against Wayne State on Friday (7pm) and Saturday (4pm).
