Coleman tallies game-high 12 points in Red Hawks win

POTSDAM, N.Y. – Timely shooting down the stretch and 52.6% shooting from the field in the final frame helped Rensselaer hold on for a 57-47 Liberty League victory over Clarkson at Alumni Gymnasium. The Red Hawks improved to 11-4 and 4-0 in the league with its eighth straight win.  The Golden Knights dropped to 4-11 overall and 0-4 in the conference.

Clarkson faces Vassar on Saturday while the Red Hawks visit St. Lawrence.  Both games begin at 2pm.

The Knights started off with a modest four-point advantage in the first few minutes, but the Red Hawks used a 7-0 run over a span of 2:25 to take a 15-8 lead. Clarkson rallied back to tie the score at 19-19, but the Red Hawks scored eight unanswered points, including four from senior Destany Eagles over the final three minutes of the half to take a 27-19 lead into the locker room.

Rensselaer was much more effective from the field in the second half, passing the ball to the post for lay ups. Trailing by as many as 15 with just over five minutes remaining, the Golden Knights went on a 12-3 run over a four-minute span to pull back to within six points with a minute left. Rensselaer iced the game with six free throws in the final minute.

Sophomore guard Whitney Coleman scored a game-high 12 points for Rensselaer, shooting 5-for-13 from the field. Classmate Elizabeth Barker added in 10 points and 10 rebounds in just 22 minutes, making four of her seven attempts from the floor.

Monica Thomas and Vanessa Westcott both scored nine points to lead Clarkson.
