HAMILTON, N.Y. – Colgate tallied two goals in the middle stanza on its way to a 3-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in ECAC Hockey League women’s ice hockey action. The Raiders, who outshot RPI 30-21 in the game, including 16-5 in the second period, improve to 12-10-2 overall with an 11-3-1 league mark. The Engineers fall to 11-14-1 overall and 7-7-1 in the ECACHL.

Colgate jumped out to an early lead at 1:27 on a goal by freshman Nicole McDonald (Calgary, AB/Bowriver Bruins). With the Raiders keeping up pressure in the RPI zone, McDonald collected a pass from classmate Ali Edell (Madison, NJ/Berkshire School) and slid it toward the front of the net, where it hit a Rensselaer defenseman's skate and slid past Engineers goalie Ashley Mayr (Burnaby, BC/BC Breakers) and into the back of the net.  Freshman Marissa Dombovy (Webster, NY/Syracuse Stars) earned the second assist on the play.

Rensselaer, which posted eight shots to Colgate’s nine in frame, had several chances to get on the board, including three point-blank shots from freshman Whitney Naslund (Bloomington, MN/Bloomington Jefferson).

The Raiders made it a three-goal advantage in the second period, outshooting the Engineers, 16-5. Junior defenseman Mallory Johnston (Chatham, ON/Bluewater Jr. Hawks) put Colgate up 2-0 at the 3:34 mark, sending a hard shot through a screen and past Mayr for her second goal of the season.

Freshman Katie Stewart (Exeter, ON/Bluewater Jr. Hawks), who scored the lone goal in Colgate’s 1-0 win over RPI in December, gave the homestanding Raiders a 3-0 lead mid-way through the period. Sophomore Sam Hunt (Calgary, AB/Bowness Bruins) sent a feed across the slot to Stewart, who beat Mayr glove-side at 12:07. Senior Ashley Bradford (Burnaby, BC/Pacific Steelers) was credited with the second assist.

Neither team lit the lamp in the final frame, which saw Rensselaer gain an 8-5 shot advantage.

Senior Brook Wheeler (Brussels, ON/Culver Academy) improved to 6-6-1 and 6-0-0 in the ECACHL with 21 stops in the victory. Mayr posted 27 saves and is now 10-12-1 on the season and 7-7-1 in conference play.
