ITHACA, N.Y. – Freshman Allysen Weidner (Wichita, KS/Shattuck St. Mary’s) tallied in the opening period and sophomore goalie Ashley Mayr (Burnaby, BC/BC Breakers) turned aside all 11 shots she faced to lift Rensselaer to a 1-0 victory over Cornell in ECAC Hockey League women’s ice hockey action. The Engineers improve to 12-14-1 overall with an 8-7-1 league mark while the Big Red fall to 3-19-1 and 3-13-0 in the ECACHL.
The Engineers got on the board in the first period on Weidner’s eighth goal of the season. With a group of players screening the goalie in front, Weidner found a loose puck in traffic and lifted it over the shoulder of netminder Beth Baronick (Liverpool, NY) at 17:44. Freshman Whitney Naslund (Bloomington, MN/Bloomington Jefferson) earned her team-leading 16th assist on the play after sending the puck from the middle of the slot.
RPI was unable to find the back of the net in the second stanza, despite outshooting the homestanding Big Red, 15-2. Sophomore Nicole McDonald (Ottawa, ON/Ottawa Raiders) nearly gave the Engineers a two-goal lead mid-way through the period, but her shot was waived off as a no-goal due to a Rensselaer player in the crease.
Cornell was unable to get the puck in the net despite pulling Baronick, who posted 28 saves in game, in the final 1:20 of the contest,
Rensselaer returns to the ice next weekend when it hosts Dartmouth and Harvard on Friday (7pm) and Saturday (4pm). Cornell is also in action on Friday and Saturday at Clarkson (7pm) and St. Lawrence (4pm), respectively.
