CORTLAND, N.Y. - Senior Dave Maggiacomo (Pleasant Valley/Arlington) scored 17 points, including five of Cortland’s 10 three-pointers, as the Red Dragons defeated Rensselaer, 65-48 in a non-league victory. Cortland improves to 4-7 with the victory, while the Red Hawks fall to 6-4.
Maggiacomo was one of four double-figure scorers for the Red Dragons. Sophomore Carson Niehoff (West Islip) scored 14 points, senior Dave Jutton (Red Hook) added 13 points along with a team-high six rebounds and freshman Mike Lewis (Brewerton/Paul V. Moore) finished with a career-best 10 points.
Rensselaer junior Sam Simmons (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy) led all scorers with 22 points and 10 rebounds. He made 10-of-16 shots from the field. Senior Clay Hadley (LaGrange, IL/Lyons Township) totaled 11 points, including three baskets from behind the arc.
Cortland shot 47 percent from the field, including 40 percent (10-of-25) from three-point range. The Red Hawks, who entered the game ranked fourth nationally in Division III in three-point field goal percentage at almost 46 percent, made only 3-of-17 treys (18 percent) and shot 39 percent overall from the field.
RPI’s lone lead came at 9-8 early in the first half. Cortland led by as many as 12 points in the opening period and took a 37-27 lead into the locker room at halftime. Trailing by 11, the Red Hawks used a Hadley three-pointer and two baskets by Simmons to pull within 42-38 with 12:53 left.
The Red Dragons, however, scored the next 13 points, sparked by three-pointers from Maggiacomo, Niehoff and Jutton and capped by a Miolan layup, and led 55-38 with 8:32 remaining. Cortland’s lead was at least 12 the rest of the game.
Rensselaer is back on the court tomorrow afternoon hosting Southern Vermont at the Robison Gym (4pm). Cortland returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Buffalo State at 8pm.
