TROY, N.Y. – Dartmouth College scored four first period goals, including two by freshman forward T.J. Galiardi, and the Big Green went on to defeat Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 6-2, in and ECAC Hockey League game at the Houston Field House.
In addition to Galiardi’s two goals, Dartmouth also got two goals and an assist from junior forward David Jones and a goal and an assist from Tanner Glass. Senior defenseman Grant Lewis added three assists for the Big Green, who improve to 6-7-2 overall and 5-5-2 in the league.
Rensselaer, which got single goals from Jonathan Ornelas and Jake Luthi, falls to 5-9-6 and 1-4-3.
Galiardi opened the scoring for the visitors just 57 seconds into the game when he scored on a wristshot from the faceoff circle. Sophomore Rob Pritchard made it 2-0 less than five minutes later before Jones scored a power play goal – Dartmouth’s first in six games – at the 8:32 mark. Galiardi’s second of the period, which came at 11:40, made it 4-0.
Ornelas pulled the Engineers to within 4-1 with a five-on-three power play goal just 51 seconds into the second period but Jones made it a four-goal lead for Dartmouth at the 19 minute mark.
Glass scored the Big Green’s sixth goal, and fourth on the power play, at 2:48 of the third period before Luthi scored on the power play for RPI. Senior Kirk MacDonald assisted on both goals for the Engineers.
Mike Devine made 27 saves in the win for Dartmouth, which was 4-for-10 on the power play. Mathias Lange started for Rensselaer, stopping five of eight shots before being replaced by Jordan Alford. Alford made 25 saves in 51:13 in relief.
Dartmouth returns to action on Saturday night against nationally-ranked New Hampshire while RPI is back in action on Friday against area-rival Union at the Field House.
