TROY, N.Y. – Junior Brooke Thompson (Rochester, NY/Rochester Edge) notched the game-tying goal at 16:42 of the third period to help the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women’s ice hockey team rally to a 2-2 tie against Brown University in ECACHL women’s hockey action at the Houston Field House. With the tie, the Engineers are now 8-11-1 overall and 4-4-1 in the league. Brown is now 2-11-2 with an 0-9-1 ECACHL mark.

The Engineers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the opening frame with senior captain Sarah Daniel (Calgary, AB/Bowness Bruins) scoring her eighth goal of the season. Sophomore Jamie-Lynn Stewart (Cambridge, ON/Cambridge Jr. Fury) started the play when she collected a pass from Thompson and swung around the net. Her shot got loose, bouncing off Bears’ goalie Nicole Stock (Buffalo Grove, IL/Connecticut Polar Bears) to Daniel, who backhanded it into the net for the goal.

Brown would tie things back up on a power play in the closing minute of the second period. With 24 seconds remaining in the frame, junior Haley Moore (Wakefield, MA/Cushing Academy) skated to the middle of the ice from the left side and sent a wrist shot into the top left corner of the net for her team-leading ninth goal of the season. Senior Krystal Strassman (Madison, WI/Boston College) picked up an assist on the goal, as did freshman Andrea Hunter (Fulton, NY/Syracuse Stars).

Junior Rylee Olewinski (Burr Ridge, IL/Wisconsin Wild) gave the Bears their first lead midway through the third. Classmate Heather Lane (London, ON/Chatham Jr. Outlaws) had a shot from the right side saved, but Olewinski grabbed the puck from a crowd in front of the net and put the rebound past sophomore Ashley Mayr (Burnaby, BC/BC Breakers) for her fourth goal of the season.

RPI got the equalizer on the power play just over seven minutes later to send the game into overtime. Thompson collected a loose puck and sent a wrist shot underneath Stock from the goaltender’s left for her second point of the game. Neither team was able to score in overtime.

Mayr made 14 saves for the Engineers, which outshot the Bears, 27-16 in the contest. Stock posted 25 saves in goal for Brown.

Rensselaer, which is now unbeaten in six of its last seven games, returns to action tomorrow afternoon against Yale (2pm) at the Houston Field House. Brown heads to Union for a 2pm game against the Dutchwomen.
