MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - Whitney Coleman (Etiwanda, CA/Etiwanda) scored 18 points and Liz Barker (Springfield, MA/Cathedral) pulled down 16 rebounds, including nine offensively, to lead the Rensselaer women's basketball team to a 60-52 win over Middlebury. RPI, which outrebounded the Panthers by 13 boards (49-36), has now won seven of its last eight games to improve to 7-4. Middlebury falls to 8-5.
Rensselaer held a 14-5 lead with 10:05 remaining in the first half, as Middlebury made two of its first 19 shots. The Panthers came back and closed the half on a 7-0 run to trail 23-18 at the intermission.
The Red Hawks led by as many as ten in the second half, before an 8-0 run at the 10:06 mark, including a three-point play by Carlie Harrington, tied the game at 38. Rensselaer answered with an 8-0 run of their own behind a pair of three’s from Caitlyn Charest (Swansea, MA/LaSalle Academy).
Middlebury battled back and tied the game at 51 on a pair of free throws from Emily Johnson with 1:22 remaining. Coleman gave the Red Hawks a 53-51 lead with less than a minute remaining, as she and her teammates went 7 of 8 from the free throw line to seal the win.
Lani Young led Middlebury with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Ashley Barron scored 11.
Coleman's 18 points was a game-high while Barker added eight points.
The Panthers return to action next Friday when they begin NESCAC play with a game at Colby. The Red Hawks also begin league play on Friday, as they host Union.
