TROY, N.Y. – Senior Meghan Zaklukiewicz (Little Falls, NY/Little Falls) scored a pair of goals to lead Utica College to a 3-1 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in non-conference field hockey action this afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 5-7 overall while the Red Hawks drop to 5-7.
A tight game after the first 35 minutes was broken open as Utica scored two goals just six minutes apart for a 3-1 lead. Defenseman Kim Martin (Prospect, NY/Holland Patent) broke the 1-1 tie after getting the ball from just inside the circle off the stick of Elizabeth Knudsen (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy), sending a shot past the left side of Red Hawks goalie Lauren Fernandes (Orange, OH/Orange) at 49:53.
Zaklukiewicz, who scored the game’s opening goal, earned her second of the game after collecting her own rebound off the RPI goalie and putting it through for the two-goal lead (3-1).
Utica opened the scoring in the game as Knudsen earned her second assist on the day after corralling the loose ball and sending a pass to Zaklukiewicz on the left side. Her shot ricocheted off of Fernandes and into the goal at 15:00.
The Red Hawks tied things up at 28:49 when sophomore Shaina Feldman (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville Area) knocked down a pass from senior Michelle Clemente (Rensselaer, NY/Columbia) from the left side. Clemente brought the ball into the arc from the far right corner, taking a hard shot which lifted in the air toward Feldman for the goal.
Pioneers goalie Amanda McDonnell (Sagamore Beach, MA/Portsmouth Abby) earned the victory, making 13 saves. For Rensselaer, Fernandes stopped seven shots.
Rensselaer returns to action on Sunday when it travels to Keene State (1pm). The Pioneers welcome Washington & Jefferson on Saturday (12pm).
