POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – A goal by junior Emma Kemp (Albany, CA/Albany) in the second overtime period gave the Vassar College women’s soccer team an exciting 2-1 Liberty League victory over RPI on Friday at Prentiss Field.

The Brewers improve to 8-4-1, and move to 3rd in the Liberty League standings with a 2-2-1 league record. Vassar hosts Rutgers-Newark on Tuesday. RPI drops to 6-7-1, 1-4-0 in the league. The Red Hawks travel to Skidmore on Friday.

The winning goal came in the 103rd minute of play off a corner kick by freshman Allison McManis (Oakland, CA/Bishop O’Dowd). Kemp out-jumped the crowd in front of the net to head in the game-ending goal in dramatic fashion.

Vassar’s second goal mirrored its first, both coming off McManis corner kicks converted into goals on headers. The Brewers got on board in the 12th minute when freshman Meredith Blackwelder (Houston, TX/M.B. Lamar) headed home a McManis corner, giving Vassar a 1-0 lead.

The Brewers maintained the lead for most of the game, but an RPI goal in the 81st minute sent the game into overtime. The game showcased the importance of corner kicks, as all three goals were scored off corners. With the ball bouncing around in the box following a Jacquelyn Garlasco (Paramus, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) corner kick, sophomore Amanda Brophy (Scituate, MA/Milton Academy) tapped in the tying goal.

Vassar out-shooting the Red Hawks 27-16. Kemp had seven shots, five on goal, while Anna Robinson (Toronto, ON/Havergal College) contributed six shots, four on goal.

Junior Anne Hutchinson (Tampa, FL/Tampa Prepatory) recorded 11 saves in goal for the Brewers. Red Hawk keeper Meghan White (Kingston, NY/Kingston) also had 11 saves.
