ST. PAUL, Minn. – Senior netminder Jordan Alford (Red Deer, AB/Canmore Eagles) made 44 saves but it was not enough as Boston College scored four special teams goals for a 4-1 win in the third place game of the Ice Breaker Invitational at the Xcel Energy Center. The Eagles, the second-ranked team in the nation, improve to 1-1-0 while the Engineers fall to 1-2-0.
Rensselaer freshman Ben Contini (Toronto, ON/North York Rangers) put the Engineers ahead at 12:05 of the opening frame when he collected a Christian Jensen (Watchung, NJ/Chicago Steel) pass in the crease, spun to avoid a defenseman and slid the puck into the net. Jake Morissette (Fruitvale, BC/Williams Lake Timberwolves), who passed the puck from the left corner to Jensen at the point, earned the secondary assist.
The Eagles tied the score with a shorthanded goal at 19:00 of the first period. While skating three-on-four, defensemen Tim Filangieri (Islip Terrace, NY/Waterloo) and Mike Brennan (Smithtown, NY/USNDP) broke in on a two-on-one with Brennan slipping the puck under Alford. Boston College finished the period with an 18-7 edge in shots.
A power play goal by BC’s Ben Smith (Avon, CT/Westminster) at 10:55 of the third period gave the Eagles a 2-1 lead. Smith, who was set up in the slot, partially fanned on his shot but the puck managed to slide under Alford. Nathan Gerbe (Oxford, MI/USNDP) and Joe Whitney (Reading, MA/Lawrence Academy) tallied the assists.
Gerbe added a goal of his own at 17:58 with the Eagles enjoying a five-on-three power play and Bertram scored a power play marker at 18:44 for the final margin.
Alford finished with 17 saves in the first period, 11 in the second and 16 in the third period. Boston College freshman John Muse (East Falmouth, MA/Noble & Greenough) finished with 22 stops.
