ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Yellowjackets scored two goals in the first half and used solid defense to keep Rensselaer off the scoreboard as Rochester claimed a 2-0 victory over RPI in non-conference women's soccer action this afternoon. The Yellowjackets are now 10-3-2 on the season while the Red Hawks fall to 6-10-1 overall.
Bojko opened the scoring at 21:36. Rochester secured a ball near midfield and pushed it ahead to Bridgette Varin. She dribbled 15 yards down the center of the pitch, then pushed the ball to here left. Bojko cut in from the wing, beat RPI goalkeeper Meghan White to the ball, and slid it past White into the net.
Less than eight minutes before intermission, Rochester won a corner kick on the left side. Laura Morrison chipped it into the goalmouth and it was headed wide for another corner. On the second corner, Morrison played it to the near post and Ross headed home her second goal of the season - this one at 38:36.
Both teams changed keepers at intermission. The Red Hawks gave the goalie shirt to Amanda Brophy, who had played in the field in the first 45 minutes. Brophy made three saves.
Rochester inserted Kate Levy in place of Molly Leitch. Levy made one save - a good one, coming early in the second half when the Red Hawks made a serious threat to get on the scoreboard. Karen Kraft looped a pass from the left sideline to the back post and Sarah Briggs headed it for the low right corner. Levy recovered and scrambled it wide of the post for a corner kick. The corner itself nearly dipped below the crossbar, but smacked it and ricocheted back outside the penalty area.
The Yellowjackets held a 14-3 advantage in shots and a 9-1 edge in corners. White made two saves and allowed both goals for RPI in the first half. Leitch was not required to make a save.
The Yellowjackets return to the field on Friday with a contest at Washington (MO) at 7:30pm. The Red Hawks wrap-up their 2007 season on Thursday with a home match against Elmira at Harkness Field (4pm).
