TROY, N.Y. – In a game that spanned over two days due to inclement weather, St. Lawrence University used solid defense and two goals in each half to defeat the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team, 4-1, on Sunday at Harkness Field. The 18th-ranked Saints improve to 8-2 overall and 3-2 in the Liberty League while the Red Hawks drop to 5-6 and 2-3.

The game, which started on Saturday afternoon, saw St. Lawrence jump out to a 2-0 lead mid-way through the first half. Freshman Meg Danielson (Shelburne, VT/Champlain Valley) got the Saints on the board at 9:50 when she found the ball off a rebound and beat Rensselaer goalie Kate Williams (Rome, NY/Holland Patent) before she could recover.

St. Lawrence gained a two-goal advantage at 20:17 when Kristi Oznik (Delafield, WI/Arrowhead) buried a shot past Williams off an errant ball in the goal crease. Shortly after the goal, the game was suspended due to heavy rain and lightning.

Play resumed on Sunday with 8:58 remaining in the first half.  The teams went scoreless through halftime, but the Saints got on the board quickly in the second half with two goals for a 4-0 cushion.

Sophomore midfielder Mackenzie Kersen (Boonton Township, NJ/Mountains Lakes) gave the visitors a three-goal advantage at 32:72 when freshman Kelsey Berry (New Hampton, NH/New Hampton) knocked the ball down and passed it through the goal mouth for the tally.

Berry made it a 4-0 lead less than six minutes later after her shot careened off the back of the RPI goalie and in at 38:49.

The Red Hawks broke onto the scoreboard with 2:01 remaining as freshman Jessica Corrigan (South Burlington, VT/Northfield Mt. Hermon) tallied her first career goal. Junior Kerri Clark’s (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) shot from the left side was saved by the Saints goalie, but deflected to Corrigan, who buried it.

Senior Lindsey Taylor (Rutland, VT/Rutland) picked up the victory for SLU, making two saves in 64:45, before giving way to freshman Lilly Callahan (Brownsville, VT/Kimball Union), who stopped one shot. Williams recorded five saves in the loss for RPI.

Rensselaer returns to action on Wednesday when it welcomes Utica to Harkness Field (4pm). The Saints are back in action on Saturday at Hartwick (12pm).
