TROY, N.Y. – Hartwick College got on the scoreboard late in the first half and held Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) at bay for a 1-0 victory at Harkness Field. The game, which was delayed an hour and forty minutes due to lightning and heavy rain, saw the Hawks improve to 5-9-0 while the Red Hawks fall to 6-6-1.
After the delay, senior Kristen Mellan (Hillsdale, NY/Taconic Hills) got the visiting Hawks on the board with her goal at 41:39. Mellan stole the ball from an RPI player on the right side and from about 22-yards out, chipped the ball in on the left side past the reach of Red Hawks goalie Courtney Sweeney (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa).
Rensselaer, which held a slim 5-3 shot advantage in the first half, saw the momentum shift in the second frame as Hartwick had numerous opportunities to add to its lead, including two off the foot of Mellan that went just wide.
The Hawks held a 7-4 lead in shots and an overall 10-9 advantage in the game to pick up the victory. Junior goalie Ashley Taylor (Nashua, NH/Nashua North) earned the win in goal with three saves while Sweeney shouldered the loss making two stops.
Rensselaer returns to action on Friday afternoon for a contest at league-rival Vassar (4pm). The Hawks play at Union on Saturday (1pm).
