Red Hawks defeat Roger Williams to advance to title game at Salem State Tip-Off

SALEM, Mass.- Senior captain Missy Jackman (Danvers, MA/Danvers) had a team-high 14 points to lead the Rensselaer women’s basketball team to a season-opening, 73-59 victory over Roger Williams at the Salem State Tip-Off Tournament.

The Red Hawks, who out-rebounded Roger Williams, 50-40 in the contest held a solid lead throughout the game. The Hawks began to climb back into it, cutting the RPI lead to seven with four minutes remaining, but Rensselaer was too strong.

In addition to Jackman, RPI saw junior Whitney Coleman (Rancho Cucamongo, CA/Etiwanda) tally 13 points. Classmates Elizabeth Barker (Springfield, MA/Cathedral) and Caitlyn Charest (Swansea, MA/LaSalle Academy) added 11 points each in the victory.

Roger Williams was led in scoring by junior guard Jacqueline Criss (Westwood, Mass.) who had 19 points, including shooting 10 of 13 from the free throw line. Also contributing baskets was sophomore guard Karen Ewanowski (Middletown, Conn.) who had 12 points on the night. Junior Heather Babin added 10 for the Hawks.

The Red Hawks return to action tomorrow afternoon in the championship game of the Salem State Tournament. RPI will battle the host Vikings at 3pm following the consolation game between Roger Williams and Lasell (1pm).
