ONEONTA, N.Y. - Rensselaer scored twice in the first 29:21 to take command and the Red Hawks went on to defeat Oneonta State, 2-0, in the first round of the ECAC Upstate Men’s Soccer Championship. With the win, RPI is now 8-6-4 and advances to the semi-finals and will face fourth-seeded St. John Fisher at Union College. The Red Dragons finish their season with a 14-6-0 record.
Sophomore Sean Fleury (Princeton, MA/ Wachusett Regional) put the visiting Red Hawks on the board just 1:29 into the game. Setting up in front of the goal, Fleury took a shot from the right side, beating Oneonta State goalie Jonathan Korn (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills) for a 1-0 lead.
Mid-way through the first half, senior Aaron Gundle (Portland, OR/Lincoln) made it a 2-0 Rensselaer advantage, when he converted a cross from sophomore Lincoln Field (Warren, NH/Hopkinton) past Korn at 29:21.
Despite being outshot, 6-2, in the second half, RPI’s defense held strong to preserve the victory and advance to the semi-finals for the second time in three seasons.
In goal, freshman Alex Penny (Northport, NY/Northport) made nine saves for his seven shutout of the season. Korn stopped one shot in the goal for the Red Dragons.
The winner of the game between RPI and St. John Fisher (12-7-1), which will be played on Saturday at Union College (11am), faces the winner of the other semi-final between second-seeded Union (12-3-4) and third-seeded Medaille (17-2-2), who will play at 1:30pm.
Sunday’s championship game is set for 12pm at Union's College Park.
