CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard men’s hockey team scored two power play goals and added an empty net tally to beat Rensselaer, 3-0, this evening at Bright Hockey Center. Sophomore goalkeeper Kyle Richter (Lake Forest, IL) made 28 saves for the Crimson, who improve to 2-1-0 overall (2-1-0 ECAC Hockey), while RPI falls to 5-3-2 overall (0-1-2).
The Crimson scored the only goal of the first period at the 19:13 minute mark. Freshman Alex Biega (Montreal, PQ) scored on the power play, with senior Jon Pelle (West Islip, NY) and sophomore Doug Rogers (Watertown, MA) picking up the assists. The tally came on Harvard’s only man advantage opportunity of the period. RPI would end up with an 11-6 shots edge on the first stanza, but Richter was up to the task, keeping the Engineers off the scoreboard with 11 saves.
A scoreless second period saw Harvard out-shoot the Engineers 12-10. The Crimson had a few chances to take the lead, but was unable to convert on two power play chances in the second. RPI was 0-1 on the man advantage in the period.
Harvard added a second goal at 11:53 of the third period. Junior Brian McCafferty (Lexington, MA) notched the second power play goal of the night for the Crimson. McCafferty won a lose puck off of a face-off in the Engineer’s zone and went top shelf to beat Rensselaer junior goalkeeper Mathias Lange (Klagenfurt, Austria).
Junior Jack Christian (Wilton, CT) finished an empty net goal after a neutral zone turnover by the Engineers to put Harvard ahead, 3-0. Christian’s goal was a short-handed tally.
Richter, who picked up the shutout, finished with 28 saves, and improves to 2-1 on the season. Lange, who ended up with 27 stops falls to 2-2-1 on the season.
