Hamden, Conn. - Quinnipiac scored two power play goals and goaltender Peter Vetri made 26 saves as the Bobcats defeated the Rensselaer men's hockey team, 3-2, in an ECAC Hockey game. Quinnipiac improves to 6-5-2 overall and 3-3-2 in the league, while RPI, the 18th-ranked team in the nation, falls to 7-5-3 and 2-2-2.
The homestanding Bobcats saw Jamie Bates score a power play goal with just 1:03 remaining in the first period for a 1-0 lead.
Rensselaer junior Andrei Uryadov (St. Petersburg, Russia/South Kent) tied the score at 4:56 when he scored with an assist from senior Jake Morissette (Fruitvale, BC/Williams Lake Timberwolves). Eric Lampe regained the one goal advantage for Quinnipiac just under two minutes later but a shorthanded goal by junior Seth Klerer (Thornhill, ON/North York Rangers) knotted the score at two with 1:30 left in the second period. Klerer's goal, his first of the season, was set up by senior Jonathan Ornelas (Mississauga, ON/Milton IceHawks).
Freshman defenseman Zach Hansen put the Bobcats in front to stay with an extra-man goal just 55 seconds into the third period and Quinnipiac held off the Engineers.
Senior Jordan Alford (Red Deer, AB/Canmore Eagles) made 17 saves in the loss for RPI.
Rensselaer is right back in action on Tuesday night when it hosts Harvard for a league game at the Houston Field House.
