TROY, N.Y. – The No. 2 Miami RedHawks scored five goals in the third period to defeat the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men’s hockey team, 7-3, in a non-conference game at the Houston Field House. RPI, the 16th-ranked team in the nation, falls to 8-6-3 overall while the RedHawks move to 15-2-0.
Freshman Carter Camper led the visitors with two goals and two assists while five others had multiple points. Among them were senior Ryan Jones and sophomore Jarod Palmer, who both had a goal and two assists.
Rensselaer led 3-2 after two periods but Miami scored 9:40 into the third period when Camper scored his second goal of the game. He deflected a Mitch Ganzak point shot past Engineers goaltender Jordan Alford.
Just 3:02 later Miami took the lead with a shorthanded goal – their second of the night. Alec Martinez broke up an Engineers pass at the blue line and fed Jarod Palmer. He sent the puck to Justin Mercier, who deked Alford for the eventual game-winner. Mercier finished with a goal and an assist.
Jones and Palmer followed with 34 seconds of one another to make the score 6-3 and Alford was replaced by senior Will Neubert. Pat Cannone, who also had an assist, beat Neubert to make the final score 7-3.
The Engineers were the first team on the scoredboard as Seth Klerer picked up a rebound of a Bryan Brutlag pass and banged the puck past Miami goaltender Charlie Effinger just 3:29 into the game.
Miami came back to tie the game when Martinez scored with on a deflection 2:19 later. The Engineers retook the lead on Brutlag’s first career goal midway through the first period. Peter Merth sent the puck from behind his own net on the power play where Andrew Lord tipped it up to Brutlag. His shot went off of Effinger for the goal.
The Engineers took a 3-1 lead 16:37 into the first period. Coming out of the penalty box, Matt Angers-Goulet came in alone on Effinger and saw his shot initially saved by Effinger, but it trickled across the goal line.
Miami cut the lead to 3-2 just 40 seconds into the second period when Camper scored his first of the game with the RedHawks shorthanded.
Effinger (4-0-0) made a total of 13 saves in the win while Alford (4-4-1) made 15 for the loss.
The two teams meet again on Sunday afternoon at 4pm at the Houston Field House.
