No. 2 Miami Knocks Off No. 16 Men's Hockey

TROY, N.Y. – The No. 2 Miami University RedHawks scored four goals in the third period to defeat the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men’s hockey team, 5-1, in a non-conference game to sweep a weekend set at the Houston Field House. RPI, the 16th-ranked team in the nation, falls to 8-7-3 overall while the RedHawks move to 16-2-0.

Miami opened the scoring on a Tommy Wingels wrist shot from the near-side boards in the right circle. A freshman, Wingels took a pass from defenseman Alec Martinez and skated up the left side before snapping a shot that rang off the post behind RPI netminder Jordan Alford at 9:48 of the first period.

The Engineers tied the game late in the second period when sophomore Christian Jensen scored on a slap shot from the left point. Senior Jake Morissette passed the puck to Jensen from the right-side boards to earn the primary assist on the goal, which came at 18:29 of the middle stanza. Junior Andrei Uryadov was credited with the secondary.

Ryan Jones put the RedHawks ahead just 27 seconds into the third period when he scored on a rebound from just outside the crease. Brian Kaufman, who had his shot stopped by Alford, earned the assist on Jones’s goal, his 16th of the season. Wingels made it 3-1 just 2:10 later when he scored off the crossbar at 2:37. Nino Musitelli and Gary Steffes earned the assists.

Justin Mercier scored in a four-on-four situation from Jarod Palmer and Martinez and Carter Camper added an empty-net goal from Mercier and Palmer to finish the scoring.

Jeff Zatkoff made 18 saves to improve his record to 12-2-0 on the season. Alford made 22 saves in the loss dropping his record to 4-5-1. Both teams did not score on the power play with Miami having four chances and the Engineers having had six chances.

Miami next plays in the Ohio Hockey Classic in Columbus, Ohio, on December 29 at 6:05pm ET, where it faces No. 17 St. Cloud State in the opening round and either No. 14 Harvard or Ohio State the next day.

The Engineers next take on No. 3 Colorado College in the Lightning Hockey Classic in Tampa, Fla., on December 29 at 8:05pm ET. They take on either No. 6 Notre Dame or No. 9 Massachusetts the next day.
