DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Colby College shot 48.2% from the field, including 47.4% from 3-point range in defeating Rensselaer, 75-58, in the second day of action at the Land of Magic Classic. The Mules improve to 6-2 overall while the Red Hawks fall to 3-5 on the year.
Led by a game-high 21 points from senior guard Mark Gaudet, Colby took a 38-23 halftime lead, and held on for the 17-point victory. Aiding Gaudet, were Artie Cutrone and Adam Choice who tallied 18 and 14 points, respectively.
Rensselaer saw senior Sam Simmons score a team-high eight points, while collecting six rebounds. Sophomore Ricky Philatre added six points, six boards and a blocked shot.
The Red Hawks, who improved their shooting from the floor in the second half, were unable to overcome 15 point first-half deficit.
Rensselaer returns to action on January 5 and 6 when they will take part in the Trinity Tournament in Hartford, Conn. The Red Hawks will open with play match-up with Eastern Connecticut State.
