SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas - Behind a game-high 20 points from senior forward Tory Lyons (Feeding Hills, MA/Agawam), the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's basketball team used a solid all-around effort to defeat St. Joseph's College (N.Y.), 74-45, at the first day of action at the South Padre Island Shootout. The Red Hawks improve to 4-4 with the win while the Golden Eagles fall to 5-5.
Holding a nine-point lead after the first half (26-17), Rensselaer, which shot 62.5% from the field in the second half, broke the game wide open in the final twenty minutes. Leading by as many as 16 (40-24) at 12:36, off a pair of free throws by junior guard Caitlyn Charest (Swansea, MA/LaSalle Academy), RPI continued to press, forcing 11 Golden Eagles turnovers.
A three-pointer by junior Kerry Hayes (Nashua, NH/Nashua North) at 6:47 made it a 20-point Red Hawks advantage and the momentum never shifted as RPI stretched its lead to 25 off a jumper and a free throw by sophomore Amanda Brophy (Scituate, MA/Milton Academy).
In addition to Lyons, who also had seven rebounds, the Red Hawks saw junior Elizabeth Barker (Suffield, CT/Cathedral) add 12 points and seven boards. Charest finished with ten points in the game.
